Matt Burgess: Director

Matt launched Burgess Sport and Entertainment Law in 2010 after working for Mal Chalmers and Company Solicitors, World Surf League and Fashiontv Oceania for a number of years. Matt has just spent the last 3 years working in Los Angeles working exclusively with World Surf League. Matt oversees all client matters and manages the firm’s network of resources to best service BSE Clients. Matt’s passion for sport and music extends beyond the office – he plays rugby, basketball, tennis, and he surfs regularly.

Matt has lectured for Sports and Entertainment law courses at Bond University, Griffith University, The University of NSW and for Legalwise Seminars. He has been involved intimately with businesses of all sizes and has provided many different types of advice to large corporations, small business and individuals. Matt is a member of the Australia and New Zealand Sports Law Association and has been a committee member for the Special Olympics QLD, the Adonis Society Inc., secretary for the Gold Coast Traffic Offenders Program and advising the the Gold Coast Surf Industry Taskforce. As the majority of his work has been international to date, Matt’s network of experts in sport and entertainment is truly global.
Mal Chalmers: Senior Consultant
Admitted in both Queensland and New South Wales, Mal has over 28 years experience as principal of his own firm, Mal Chalmers and Company. He operates from the Gold Coast in Queensland where he has earned a trusted profile within the local community. He has extensive experience in commercial, criminal, family and sports law. He has earned his place a valued member of the Australia and New Zealand Sports Law Association providing many years of service to the organisation in many varied capacities. the sport of surfing is where Mal’s passion lies and his involvment within the surfing community both on the Gold Coast and around Australia places him firmly within the sport’s Australian royalty.
Mal brings his deep wisdom, experience and broad understanding of commercial disputes to BSE Law clients’ matters. The application of these skills and his broad network of practical remedies available, BSE Law clients can count on being ahead of the game and ensure the consequences of any direction suggested by BSE has been closely evaluated against over 30 years experience.
